What is a Gender Ultrasound Scan?

In the days of old, parents would wait until the baby was born to find out his or her gender. However, now, it is possible to have a gender scan to find out as early as your 18th week of pregnancy. Many soon-to-be parents and people trying to conceive have many questions about the gender ultrasound scan.

What is a Gender Ultrasound Scan?
When women are pregnant, they have different ultrasounds to look at the baby. The ultrasound is done externally and no known risks exist to either mommy or the little one. During the ultrasound, the doctor is generally able to determine if the baby is a boy or girl. Sometimes, when the the baby is in a certain position, it can be difficult to see. The woman may wish to return for another ultrasound to double check the gender.

Why Should I Get One?
Yes, that surprise when the baby is first born is certainly lovely, and quite a number of people still want to have it. However, a gender scan can be quite useful for parents. For example, let’s say that you are having a baby shower. Guests will have a difficult time selecting gifts if you do not know if you are having a girl or a boy. On top of that, decorating a room is a lot easier when you know the gender of the baby. Of course, if you are opting for gender neutral colors or a theme anyway, then it does not matter as much. But, sometimes it’s good to know so you can plan ahead.

What Else Do I Need to Know?
Usually, you can have the gender scan done when you are 18 weeks pregnant. Still though, you should check with your doctor to find out when the best time is for you. The results of gender scans are 95 percent accurate. This figure is pretty standard for all different types of ultrasound centres. In general, the later you go for an ultrasound, the more chance it has of being accurate. Therefore, you may wish to wait until the 20 week mark or later to really know the gender of your baby. Buying all blue items could turn out to be a bit of a hassle if you wind up having a girl!

Plenty of parents are choosing to have a gender scan because it really helps them to prepare for the arrival of their precious little one and to start planning even more.
