Pregnancy, while exciting, can be a daunting time for parents-to-be. Many pregnant women worry about how their baby is developing in the womb, and whether everything is ok. The time between hospital appointments can seem to stretch out indefinitely and some couples find the wait unbearable. In addition to your very important hospital scan we are here to offer additional scans in times of worry or stress or just to have another peek. At Ultrasound Dimensions, we offer a full range of pregnancy ultrasounds to check the development of your growing baby, and our friendly staff have the time and expertise to answer the many questions you may have.
If our expert staff are unable to get a clear image of the baby, they may ask you to have a drink and take a short walk just before continuing just to be sure the best imaging possible is obtained. If, after this, they are still unable to get a clear image, you will be invited back on another day at no extra charge. We understand how important it is to obtain clear photos of your developing baby, for your own peace of mind and bonding, as well as for the medical assessment.
Scans during early pregnancy are usually carried out to accurately date the pregnancy. While you may have a rough idea of when your baby is due, a dating scan will help to more accurately pinpoint your baby’s estimated due date. By measuring your baby’s growth, determining the presence of a single or multiple pregnancy and assessing the development, we can determine how far along in your pregnancy you are. The earlier in your pregnancy you are the more accurate the dating. After the scan, you will be given a printed report and a glossy photo print.
Well Baby Scan
Pregnancy can be a time of anxiety and worry for some expectant couples, so to put your mind at ease, we offer a well baby scan to check the development and position of your baby in the womb from 18 weeks onwards. During this scan, your baby’s growth will be assessed by measuring the thigh bone, the head and the abdomen. We will examine the amount of amniotic fluid, and the position of the placenta. Your baby’s anatomy and movements will also be assessed. Our skilled sonographers will answer any of your questions, and provide reassurance about your baby’s development. After the scan, you will be given a printed report and a glossy photo print. In addition you can opt for more photos or video on a CD or DVD so you can share the experience with your friends and family.
Nuchal Translucency Scan
A nuchal translucency scan can help to identify babies at risk of having a chromosomal abnormality such as Downs Syndrome. The scan must be carried out between 11.2 and 13.6 weeks. During this time it is possible to identify high risk babies by measuring the amount of fluid at the back of the foetal neck. The result of this measurement, when combined with maternal age, can help to identify a baby at risk for certain chromosomal abnormalities. Risk is calculated by the age of the Mother and the thickness of the nuchal translucency with an accuracy of 80 %. This test is a screening and not a diagnosis. After the scan, you will be given a printed report and a glossy photo print. In addition you can opt for more photos or video on a CD or DVD so you can share the experience with your friends and family.
Please note, the blood test is not offered at our centre.
(Heart) Fetal Echocardiography
This scan is performed after 18 weeks gestation to detect a heart problem before the baby is born. About one in 100 babies are born with a heart defect. It is the most common abnormality a baby can be born with. It can provide a more detailed view of baby’s heart than a regular pregnancy ultrasound. This test is performed specifically to demonstrate blood flow through the heart, heart rhythm and structures of the baby’s heart. After the scan, you will be given a printed report and a glossy photo print.
Detailed Anatomy Scan
After week 18, you are able to have a Detailed Anatomy Scan to gain further information into your baby’s development. At this scan, the sonographer will look in detail at your baby’s organs and ensure things are developing as expected. While it may be difficult for you to understand the images, our sonographers will talk you through the process, and explain the images on the screen.
The baby’s head will be measured, and the internal structures of the brain will be examined. The sonographer will check the baby’s lips and nose for any obvious defects. The spine will be examined to ensure that all of the vertebrae are in alignment, and that the skin surrounding the spine is closed. The baby’s abdominal wall is checked to make sure that all of the abdominal organs are in the correct position. The baby’s chest will be examined to assess the lungs and the structure and positioning of the heart.
The stomach and bladder will also be checked. Babies swallow amniotic fluid in the womb, and urinate approximately every half hour. The Sonographer or midwife will check to see that your baby’s bladder is functioning properly by monitoring this process during the scan.Your baby’s legs, arms, hands and feet will be examined. The umbilical cord and position of the placenta will be assessed.
The Sonographer is trained to identify and explore any abnormalities detected during this scan, and will answer any of your questions during the appointment. After the scan, you will be given a printed report and a glossy photo print. In addition you can opt for more photos or video on a CD or DVD so you can share the experience with your friends and family.
Gender Assessment Scan
From week 18 onwards, we offer a gender assessment scan to determine your baby’s gender. This assessment is 97% accurate, and is great for helping you to plan ahead. It can be very exciting for parents. Boy, girl, pink or blue. Some parents want to keep the surprise for the big day and that is exciting too. After the scan, you will be given a glossy image photo print. In addition you can opt for a report and more photos or video on a CD or DVD so you can share the experience with your friends and family.
3D/4D scans allow you to see your baby’s features and what your baby looks like in the womb. Traditional ultrasounds in grey scale are very important for diagnostic purposes and offer you peace of mind about your baby’s development. A 3D/4D scan uses the latest technology to generate lifelike images of your baby in the womb. The fourth dimension in 4D scans, is time, and we are able to offer moving images of your baby in the womb. These state of the art images allow you to see what your baby looks like. To see them blink, yawn, wave or kick.
The images offer a unique bonding experience with your unborn child. Our experienced Sonographer or midwife will use their expertise to ensure they take the best possible images of your baby. You will receive a DVD of the session, as well as a CD of high quality scan images, and a glossy photo prints to share with your friends and family. In addition you can opt for a full well baby scan report.
